CCG Holds 8th China and Globalization Forum
The world is confronted with unprecedented changes unseen in a century, while the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine crisis have accelerated the evolution of the international landscape. The international system is facing a reset where a new “Bretton Woods moment” is in front of us and globalization is about to be reimagined.
On June 19-21, 2022 , the Center for China and Globalization (CCG) and the Chinese Association of International Economic Cooperation (CAFIEC) jointly held the 8th China and Globalization Forum in Beijing, China.
Focusing on the theme of ‘Grasping the World Transition and Coping with Global Crisis: Strategies for China and Globalization in an Era of Uncertainty’, nearly one hundred guests attended this forum and discussed major issues on China and globalization in both online and offline activities. Participants included representatives from all sectors of government, industry, academia and research, including former politicians and dignitaries, diplomatic envoys to China, representatives of international organizations, renowned scholars, and entrepreneurs.
The forum consisted of eight special sessions, including a Fireside Chat, a Summit Dialogue, an Ambassadors Roundtable, China-Europe Roundtable, and China-US Think Tank Dialogue, as well as the private CCG Council Chairs Virtual Roundtable and CCG Council Members Luncheon Roundtable. Key topics included Global Recovery, China-US, and China-Europe relations. The forum held a special China-Globalization 30 Experts Roundtable as the closing ceremony. CCG’s latest publication “China and Globalization in the 21st Century”, released by CITIC Press, was also introduced to the public for the first time. At the conference, 30 well-known scholars from various disciplines expressed their views on the transition, dilemmas, and breakthroughs of seen in China and in the process of globalization throughout the 21st century thus far.
On June 19, the forum opened with speeches by CCG President Wang Huiyao and Cui Mingmo, the President of the CAFIEC, followed by the 2022 CCG Council Chairs Roundtable and the annual Chairman’s Enlarged Meeting on China and the Globalisation Landscape.
The webinar provided an in-depth analysis of the macro-trends and strategies in these uncertain times. The panelists discussed the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on the global economy and how China should respond as well as how China should lead global economic recovery confronted with the dilemmas such as the US Indo-Pacific economic framework and regular COVID prevention and control measures. It also examined what opportunities and challenges multinational enterprises will encounter in the context of multiple regional economic cooperation spheres as well as new directions and strategies for international talent flows and competition influenced by unconventional security factors, such as COVID-19 and political entanglements.
On June 20, five sessions were held.
Special Online Program I was themed Advancing the 2030 Agenda in Uncertain Times: Sustainability and the Quest for China-US Cooperation. This fireside chat was moderated by CCG President and CAFIEC Vice Chairman Wang Huiyao. Henry M. Paulson, Jr., former US Treasury Secretary and the Founder and Chairman of Paulson Institute, along with Wang Shi, CCG Senior Vice President and Founder and Honorary Chairman of China Vanke Co., Ltd., discussed the important question of how China and the US should cooperate to ensure sustainable development amidst major transformations.
They analyzed the prospects and challenges of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the future of China-US business cooperation in clean energy and green technologies, the role of multilateral partnerships in advancing sustainable development practices, and a vision of what the world landscape will look like in a decade under the UN 2030 Agenda for SDGs. The Ambassadors Roundtable concentrated on the Global Recovery in Post-pandemic Times: Trends, Challenges, and Responses, with speeches by H. E. Lin Songtian, the President of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and former Chinese Ambassador to South Africa. Twenty ambassadors to China attended the seminar, chaired by CCG President and CAFIEC Vice Chairman Wang Huiyao.
The panelists discussed long-run governance tools and mechanisms used in the response to COVID-19, their impact on global trade and economic dynamism, the influence of international travel restrictions on cross-border business, and what concrete actions can be taken by international organizations such as APEC, BRICS, and G20 to promote the global development agenda in the post-epidemic era. The China-Europe Roundtable was titled China-Europe Economic Cooperation: Moving Forward with the Global Quest for Sustainability and hosted by Andy Mok, a CCG Senior Fellow.
The guests engaged in a useful exchange of views on how China and Europe can promote and safeguard their common interests through a multilateral system, how they can coordinate actions on climate change, what business strategies they should adopt to deal with regular epidemic prevention and control measures as well as changes in the supply chain in the course of trying to achieve “carbon neutrality” objectives. They also touched on how the EU should position China as a ‘negotiating partner’, ‘economic competitor’ and ‘systemic counterpart’.
The Special Online Program II, themed History at a Turning Point: Pandemic, Ukraine, and the Changing Relations between China, Europe, and the United States, featured CCG President and former Senior Fellow of Harvard Kennedy School Wang Huiyao, Niall Ferguson, former Professor at Harvard University and the Milbank Family Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University.
They discussed current global instability, the prospects of China-US-Europe relations, and other important international issues. They also examined the impact of the Ukraine crisis on the existing international order, the creation, and breakdown of ‘Chimerica’ the possibility of a “second Cold War”, and the political legacy of Nixon’s visit to China.
The Special Online Program III of the China-US Think Tank Dialogue was themed Realigning the US-China Trade and Economic Relationship: Inflation, Tariffs, and the Way Forward. CCG President and the CAFIEC Vice President Wang Huiyao moderated the session on the outlook of US-China economic and trade relations
The panelists reassessed the costs and benefits of tariffs and analyzed the lessons of stimulus and inflation. At the same time, they shared their opinions on China’s understanding of the Indo-Pacific economic framework and how China and the US could break the diplomatic stalemate.
On June 21, the China Globalization 30 Experts Roundtable was held on a theme titled China and Globalization in the 21st Century.
The Roundtable began with Chen Wei, General Manager of CITIC Press, introducing the conference’s namesake new book – China and Globalization in the 21st Century. A total of 30 senior and leading experts and scholars participated in the seminar, hosted by Miao Lu, CCG Co-Founder and Secretary-General. This panel of experts are deeply engaged in policymaking, think tanks, and academic communities with a diverse background covering global governance, international relations, politics, economics, cultural research, historiography, and communication.
The speakers shared insights and provided suggestions on how China should deeply integrate and promote transformation and development based in globalization. Focusing on the post-epidemic era, the main topics included how China should respond to changes in globalization, how China can provide Chinese solutions and ideas to promote globalization, how China can innovatively enhance its core competitiveness in global governance, and the future development trend of globalization.
This event was followed by the closed-door CCG Council Members Luncheon Roundtable, moderated by Zhang Wei, CCG Deputy Secretary-General and former Chief Correspondent of United Nations Bureau, Economic Daily.
Globalization has always been a continuous process of ups and downs. There is no smooth path, and there is no blind alley. At present, the lack of credibility among countries and the emergence of a tide of anti-globalization pose a huge challenge. It is particularly valuable and necessary to strengthen consensus through increased communication and to foster mutual trust and cooperation and economic and trade exchanges between states. After crossing into the 21st century, the world began to usher in an ‘Asian Century’. China will play an important role in leading this new round of globalization. In the new era, China will be faced with the challenging task of setting the course of the world transformation, leveraging China’s role, and ensuring that globalization becomes more inclusive and sustainable, aking it better able to respond to global crises.
