Enhancing Global Governance in a Fragmented World: Prospects, Issues, and the Role of China is the eighth volume in the series. In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic, de-globalization, geopolitical tensions, economic disruptions, energy crisis, ecological, environmental and climate crises have given rise to and shaped the “polycrisis” currently affecting nearly all nations with profound implications for international politics, the world economy and global governance.

What are the forces fragmenting our world—and how should we respond? How can we adapt to the new twists and turns in globalization?

This volume brings together the wisdom and insights of 30 leading figures from the global think tank community that emphasize a common, central theme through all of the 25 essays, which is the need for a more universal, inclusive and multilateral approach to reforming global governance. The book also examines these issues from China’s perspective, analyzing its role in global development, providing a valuable reference for policymakers, scholars, entrepreneurs, and readers interested in international affairs. Since its launch in June 2024, this book has received 99,000 downloads.

The Future of China’s Development and Globalization: Views from Ambassadors to China is the seventh volume in the series and the second ambassadorial volume. As the world continues to recover from the fear and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, it faces new challenges—rising geopolitical tensions, intensifying food and energy crises, and the persistent threat of climate change. These developments have further complicated global economic recovery, exacerbated existing inequalities,  fueled a growing wave of anti-globalization sentiment and posed serious challenges to global governance.

This moment calls for renewed consensus and strengthened cooperation to help define the framework for the future of globalization. In this volume, 28 ambassadors examine China’s role amid a world in constant flux, offering perspectives on its trade and investment relationships, its engagement in multilateralism and regional relations, as well as its contributions to global governance. Since its launch in January 2024, the book has been downloaded 151,000 times.

Soft Power and Great-Power Competition: Shifting Sands in the Balance of Power Between the United States and China, authored by Joseph S. Nye Jr.—the father of the term “soft power” and professor at Harvard University—is the sixth volume in the series. Nye defines “soft power” as the ability to influence others through attraction rather than coercion or payment. In his view, soft power is not a zero-sum game: if China becomes more attractive to the United States, and the United States becomes more attractive to China, both countries can benefit—and potentially narrow their differences.

This volume brings together essays spanning the past three decades of Nye’s writing and offers a reflection on the nature of power, the global role of the United States, and the dynamics of U.S.-China relations

Through this collection, readers are invited to gain a better understanding of the shifting global landscape and consider that while great power competition may be inevitable in a multipolar world, cooperation on transnational challenges remains a positive sum endeavor. Since its launch in April 2023, the book has been downloaded 528,000 times.

The period oversaw the reshaping of the global landscape reshaped by China’s continued rise, intensifying great power competition, and a public health crisis fundamentally altered daily life.

The essays revolve around three interconnected themes – China’s remarkable development under its policy of Reform and Opening-up, China’s deepening integration into the global economy and rise in an increasingly multipolar world; and the urgent need to reinvigorate global governance and multilateralism to meet the pressing global challenges of the 21st century.
