After a global career as an Australian and multilateral diplomat, trade official, visiting professor, and senior adviser to governments, businesses, universities, and the United Nations, David Morris brings his wealth of experience and insight to his timely and thought-provoking book, A New Era of Risk: Why We Need a New, Sustainable Internationalism to Manage the Rise of China, published in early 2025.

This book explores the 2020s, an era marked by a perfect storm of seismic shifts in the international order, geopolitics and the world economy, amid rapid technological transformation and an escalating climate crisis. At the center of this maelstrom stands China, a rising power that challenges the post-Cold War, US-led world order. Morris argues that Western geopolitical thinking, rooted in zero-sum logic, is catastrophizing risks and edging the world toward binary conflict. Instead, he advocates for a new, sustainable internationalism—one that allows for realist competition between nations without descending into confrontation, and that seeks pragmatic cooperation on shared challenges such as climate change, development financing, and emerging technologies. The concept of sustainable internationalism also draws on confidence in Asia that a new cooperative security and globalization can be achieved.

Based on a wide array of interviews with international experts, stakeholders and practitioners, Morris examines the rise of China through an important series of case studies. These include the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Huawei’s development, and the Belt and Road Initiative infrastructure projects across Southeast Asia and Eurasia.

For policymakers, scholars, and engaged global citizens, this book offers an essential guide to understanding the emerging multipolar world order and navigating the search for new frameworks and ideas for international cooperation amid the ongoing reconfiguration of global power structures.
