CCG 2nd International Visit in Pandemic 2022
Today the world is entering a new era in which instability and transformation co-exist. Various challenges are intertwined with barriers to people-to-people exchanges while there is an urgent need for the resumption of mutual communication. At this crucial moment, a team of experts from CCG set off on a regional tour from November 11th to 17th in a bid to build an inclusive platform for dialogue and cooperation, gather support from society and fulfill its role as a think tank help find solutions to the severe challenges facing globalization and the lack of certainty and stability in the world today.
Singapore: Focusing on global economic recovery and Asian regional cooperation
The Asia Future Summit was hosted by The Straits Times of Singapore, aiming to review the significant events happened in the past year and outlook the crucial events that may happen and may influence global affairs and Singapore in the next year.
■ East Asia Strategy Forum (online)
On 1 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao engaged in East Asia Strategy Forum online, sharing his views on the theme of “Regional Perspectives on East Asia’s Strategic Environment: Security Regimes, Challenges, and Actors”.
The East Asia Strategy Forum (EASF 2022) was jointly hosted by the Institute for Peace & Diplomacy (IPD) and the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada), aiming to promote the development of geopolitics and geoeconomics in East Asia.
■ RSIS Workshop on “Navigating US-China Geo-Economic and Technological Competition
On 2 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao and CCG Secretary-General Miao Lu attended the RSIS Workshop on “Navigating US-China Geo-Economic and Technological Competition” on invitation. They had discussions with Evan Medeiros, Professor in Asian Studies of Georgetown University and former Senior Director for Asia of the National Security Council on the issues of geoeconomics, technical competition and decoupling between China and the United States.
The S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) was established in January of 2007 and it mainly conducts basic research on traditional and untraditional security challenges that Singapore and its region face.
■ Think Asia Forum on “Asia in a complex world”
On 2 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao and CCG Secretary-General Miao Lu attended the “Think Asia Forum – Asia in a complex world”, and made statements on the themes including “Global economic recovery and Asian regional cooperation” and “Challenges on the road of Asian moderation” respectively.
The Think Asia Forum is committed to building an open platform for dialogue among Asian think tanks and providing the infinite power of intelligence to drive development and progress in Asia.
■ Symposium on Global Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance 2022
On 3 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao and CCG Secretary-General Miao Lu were invited to and attended the Symposium on Global Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance 2022 hosted by Huayang Research Center for Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance where they had in-depth discussions on the global ocean governance under multilateralism with the guests.
The Symposium on Global Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance is committed to building a platform that raises concern for sea-related issues and promotes international cooperation.
■ Visit with Danny Quah, Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy
On 4 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao and CCG Secretary-General Miao Lu visited Danny Quah, Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, during which they discussed issues including China-Singapore relations, people-to-people exchanges, the Asia-Pacific order and international economics.
Danny Quah has been the Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy since 2018 and mainly focuses on research in global supply and demand from an economic perspective.
■ Meeting with Paul Haenle, the Maurice R. Greenberg Director’s Chair at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
On 4 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao and CCG Secretary-General Miao Lu met with Paul Haenle, the Maurice R. Greenberg Director’s Chair at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and director at the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy and discussed topics including the situation in the Asia-Pacific region, China-US relations and cooperation and international communication between think tanks.
Paul Haenle once served as part of a US negotiating team and played a crucial role in Six-party Talks on the North Korean nuclear issue.
■ Visit with James Crabtree, Executive Director of International Institute for Strategic Studies
On 4 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao and CCG Secretary-General Miao Lu visited James Crabtree, Executive Director of International Institute for Strategic Studies and also the host of the Shangri-La Dialogue and had an in-depth discussion on topics including Asia-Pacific security and cooperation.
The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is a leading think tank in the UK. James Crabtree is the organizer of the annual Shangri-La Dialogue of IISS. His research concentrates on the Asia-Pacific region.
■ Meeting with the President and Editor-in-chief of The Straits Times
On 4 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao and CCG Secretary-General Miao Lu met with the President and Editor-in-chief of The Straits Times, sharing views on topics including Asia’s growth potential, global economics, the future of Asia and regional cooperation with each other.
The Straits Times is Singapore’s oldest English newspaper and covers multiple areas including international news, regional news including East Asia, Southeast Asia, Singapore, as well as sports and finance.
■ Global Town Hall 2022
On 5 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao attended the Global Town Hall 2022 online. It was hosted by the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI) with the theme of “Sustaining Peace and Development in a Divided and Dangerous World”. He delivered a statement during a parallel session themed as “The World as Democracies vs. Autocracies: It’s Not That Simple! An East-West North-South Debate”.
The Global Town Hall focuses on crucial agendas including economic recovery, geopolitics, international conflicts and cooperation, providing brand-new intelligence to the solution of geopolitical conflicts and global challenges.
■ SALT iConference Asia
On 15 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao was invited to and attended the symposium themed as “The New World Order – A new paradigm for Post 20th CPC Congress China and International Cooperation”.
SALT was established by SkyBridge Capital in 2009. During the 3-day high-level dialogue, SALT gathered about 2,000 well-known investors and thinkers.
■ Luxembourg China Finance Forum 2022
On 17 November, the Luxembourg China Finance Forum 2022 which was hosted by Luxemburg for Finance, opened. CCG President Wang Huiyao attended the forum and engaged in discussions on the opportunities and development of global firms in China in the post-pandemic era.
The Luxembourg China Finance Forum adopted the theme “Global firms in China in 2022”, and analyzed new business and market opportunities for global firms in China.
■ Bloomberg New Economy Forum and China’s future direction
On 17 November, the Bloomberg New Economy Forum was held in Singapore. CCG President Wang Huiyao attended the forum and shared his views on signals released on China’s economic development and opening-up after the 20th CPC Congress with Nisid Hajari from the Editorial Board of Bloomberg Opinion.
Bloomberg New Economy Forum is Bloomber’s flagship forum and is committed to clarifing the challenges of economic development and solutions.
Berlin: Enhancing communication, mutual understanding and learning between China and Germany
■ In-person meeting with Boris Ruge, Vice Chairman of the Munich Security Conference (MSC)
On 7 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao met with Boris Ruge, Vice Chairman of the Munich Security Conference (MSC). They had an in-depth discussion on topics including geopolitical security, global public health and energy crisis.
The Munich Security Conference is the world’s leading forum for debating international security policy. Boris Ruge previously served as Director Middle East/North Africa in the Foreign Office in Berlin, as German Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, and as Deputy Ambassador in the US.
■ In-person dialogue with Daniel Benjamin, President of the American Academy in Berlin
On 7 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao and CCG Secretary-General Miao Lu met with Daniel Benjamin, President of the American Academy in Berlin at the German Center, discussing topics including Chinese-German relations, three-way relations between China, Europe and the United States and the promotion of people-to-people exchanges.
The American Academy in Berlin was founded in 1994 at the initiative of Richard Holbrooke. Benjamin was a senior fellow in foreign policy studies and director of the Center on the United States and Europe at the Brookings Institution.
■ Meeting with Michael Schumann, Vice President of China Bridge and German Federal Association for Economic Development and Foreign Trade (BWA)
On 7 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao met with Michael Schumann, Vice President of China Bridge and German Federal Association for Economic Development and Foreign Trade (BWA) and engaged in an in-depth talk on topics including the affiliation between China and Germany, bilateral economic and trade development and people-to-people exchanges.
Michael Schumann is the founder of China Bridge. German Federal Association for Economic Development and Foreign Trade (BWA) was established in 2003 and mainly serves German corporations that are engaged in foreign investment and trade.
■ A preparatory call with Luxemburg for Finance before the Luxembourg China Finance Forum 2022
On 7 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao had a preparatory call with Luxemburg for Finance before the Luxembourg China Finance Forum 2022 to discuss the theme and agenda of Luxembourg China Finance Forum 2022 in light of the opportunities and development of global firms in China.
The Luxembourg China Finance Forum was themed “Global firms in China in 2022”, aiming to analyze new business and market opportunities for global firms in China, discuss relevant issues facing financial products and services and expand the channels of communication.
■ Meeting with Zhang Junhui, minister for the Chinese embassy in Germany
On 8 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao met with Zhang Junhui, minister for the Chinese embassy in Germany, and had a dialogue with him.
Zhang Junhui previously served in the Department of West European Affairs of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China’s embassy in Austria and China’s embassy in Switzerland. In July, 2022, CCG President Wang Huiyao introduced him to CCG’s research on China and Europe and work related to international communication.
■ Dialogue with Nora Müller, Executive Director International Affairs at Körber-Stiftung and Julia Ganter, Indo-Pacific expert and editor of “The Berlin Pulse”
On 8 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao had an online meeting with Nora Müller, Executive Director International Affairs, Körber-Stiftung and Julia Ganter, Indo-Pacific expert and editor of “The Berlin Pulse”, Körber-Stiftung publication. They had an in-depth dialogue on areas including China-Europe relations, communication and cooperation.
Körber-Stiftung was established in 1959 by the entrepreneur Kurt A. Körber. Nora Müller mainly works on quantitative research in the social sciences. Julia Ganter is a Asia-Pacific research expert of Körber-Stiftung and mainly works on research on international relation and public policy.
■ Dialogue with experts at the Global Solutions Initiative (GSI)
On 8 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao had an online discussion with Markus Engels, Secretary-General and Agnes Michalik, Managing Director of GSI. And they had an in-depth dialogue on issues including G20 cooperation, think tank development and exchange, and the export of green technologies.
The Global Solutions Initiative is a global collaborative enterprise comprised of a network of world-renowned think tanks. Dr. Markus Engels has worked as a senior scientific advisor at the German Federal Parliament, the European Parliament and the Executive Board of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).
Brussels: Looking forward to the future of China-EU relations
■ Visit to the European Policy Centre (EPC)
On 9 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao and CCG Secretary-General Miao Lu visited Brussels and had constructive meetings and dialogues with CCG partners and EPC experts. The topics of the meetings included the future of China-EU cooperation and potential risks.
EPC is an independent, not-for-profit think tank and provides a platform for engaging partners, stakeholders and citizens in EU policy-making and in the debate about the future of Europe.
■ Meeting with Bruno Liebhaberg, Founder and Director General of CERRE
On 9 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao and CCG Secretary-General Miao Lu met with Bruno Liebhaberg, Founder and Director General of Centre on Regulation in Europe (CERRE) in Brussels, and had a constructive dialogue on digital cooperation, global governance and digital economy.
CERRE is a well-known European not-for-profit think tank founded in 2010 in Brussels. It aims to support and inform ever better regulation in Europe and beyond, and focuses on the energy and sustainability, tech, media, telecom, and mobility sectors.
■ Visit to the US German Marshall Fund (GMF)
On 9 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao and CCG Secretary-General Miao Lu met with Andrew Small, Senior Transatlantic Fellow, Asia Program of the United States German Marshall Fund, and had an informative conversation on China-US-Europe relations, geopolitical crises and multilateral cooperation.
GMF was founded in 1972 and champions the principles of democracy, human rights, and international cooperation. As a senior fellow in GMF Asia Program, Andrew Small focuses on U.S.–China relations, Europe–China relations, Chinese policy in South Asia, and broader developments in China’s foreign and economic policy.
■ Europe-Asia Center Luncheon Reception
On 9 Novermber, CCG President Wang Huiyao and CCG Secretary-General Miao Lu participated in the Europe-Asia Center Luncheon Reception hosted by Chairman Piet Steel, and had constructive discussions on China-EU cooperation and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
The EU-Asia Centre was founded in 2011 and aims to connect people and transfer knowledge across continents. Chairman Piet Steel was a former ambassador to Belgium, and held major diplomatic posts in Geneva, Vietnam and Hong Kong between 1975 and 1997.
Paris: Promoting multilateral cooperation and facing global challenges
■ Visit to the French Ministry for European and Foreign Affairs
On 10 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao and CCG Secretary-General Miao Lu visited French Ministry for European and Foreign Affairs, and had a small seminar with PP and Asia Department colleagues at the MFA on topics related to China-EU trade relations and China in the current complex geopolitical environment.
The French Ministry for Europes and Foreign Affairs has the third largest diplomatic network in the world after China and the US. Its main area of concern include France and the UN, human rights, humanitarian actions, security, disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and international justice.
■ Discussion with Arancha Gonzalez Laya, Dean of Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA), Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain
On 10 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao and CCG Secretary-General Miao Lu visited Sciences Po at its new campus in the center of Paris accompanied by Arancha Gonzalez Laya, Dean of Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) during which they exchanged Views on the future of China-EU cooperation, trade and multilateralism.
Ms González previously was Assistant-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the International Trade Centre (2013-2020), and was responsible for negotiating trade agreements and assisting developing countries in trade development.
■ Dinner organized by the Representative of the European Commission in France on the occasion of the PPF
On 10 November, CCG President Wang Huiyao and CCG Secretary-General Miao Lu participated in the Dinner organized by the Representativen of the European Commission in France on the occasion of the PPF in Paris and had a informative conversation with Pascal Lamy, President of Paris Peace Forum and Angel Gurría, President-elect and former Secretary-General of the OECD on the topic of “Global partnerships and joint action: how can we bridge the East-West and North-South divides?”.
Pascal Lamy was the former Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). During his tenure as President of the Paris Peace Forum, he made an important contribution to promoting the Forum as a world-class event and organization.
Angel Gurría was Mexico’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Finance and Public Credit before serving as Secretary-General of the OECD from 2006 to 2021. Under his leadership, the organization became a pillar of the global economic governance architecture and advanced active cooperation with the G20, G7, APEC and other international forums.
