The Center for China and Globalization released a new report on Feb. 9 that advised China to join TPP as a key economic and diplomatic strategy as the United States entered the era of Donald Trump administration.

CCG has been closely watching the political situation in the United States and released the report, “China Entering into New Era of Diplomacy, Should Consider Joining TPP,” only less than 20 days after President Trump was sworn in. It analyzes the new international situation as a result of the US government shift and identifies the new tasks of China’s diplomacy.

CCG President and co-author of the report Wang Huiyao said at the releasing ceremony that China’s diplomacy has entered into a new era with new mission, in which it needs to base the policies on both domestic and international reality and focus on the two priorities – security and development. Moving on, he suggested China’s diplomatic efforts to be more focused on improving China’s geopolitical environment and creating more strategic opportunities, and economic diplomacy is one of the best tools to achieve this goal.

The other co-author, CCG’s Secretary General Miao Lu pointed out that China’s economic development has built a solid foundation for its economic diplomacy. Therefore, it is a great timing now for China to join TPP and it should seize this opportunity.

The report provides a thorough analysis about the necessity and benefit of joining TPP from multiple aspects. By now, quite a number of TPP members have publicly welcomed China to join TPP and fill the vacancy left behind by the United States. Therefore, a TTP membership can help China improve its overall international relations in the region. In addition, since China and America share a lot of common interest fundamentally, China’s participation in TPP is conducive to the formation of FTAAP and even a wider range of regional economic mechanism.

The report also argues that Trump administration is moving closer to Russia and intends to create more friction in the East Asia. By joining TPP, China can improve relations with the countries in East Asia and Southeast Asia, accelerate Asian integration and move forward the “One Belt, One Road” initiatives. Once becoming a TPP member, China can demonstrate to the world its economic openness and commitment to achieving global prosperity.
