Harvey Dzodin: 70th anniversary parade reflects China’s great progress
The magnificent 70th anniversary parade celebrating New China had many notable highlights, especially President Xi Jinping's address. William Shakespeare wrote that "brevity is the soul of wit". Today we'd say it differently: "less is more". In less than 10 minutes, President Xi managed to highlight and emphasize a number of the most important themes, elements of which were graphically and dramatically demonstrated in the parade that followed. For some of the city’s young people, anxieties about house prices and social mobility, for example, have fed into a sense of uncertainty about the future. Thankfully, development of the Greater Bay Area offers great opportunities. Hong Kong has prospered as a gateway to China. However, it continues to rely on the same pillar sectors it has for decades. The bay area scheme offers a golden opportunity for Hong Kong to reposition itself and diversify, acting as a catalyst for innovation and entrepreneurship.

Laurence Brahm: Rational and healthy growth should be China’s new normal
China’s 2018 GDP growth rate came in at 6.6 percent. This is technically the lowest average growth rate reported by China for the past 28 years, making global capital markets worried where investment bank analysts are toiling with the question of whether China is headed toward a recession. If this were the case, it would be a signal of oncoming global recession.
