Wang Huiyao: Growth in Parallel with Reform and Opening-up
FORTY years ago, China launched the reform and opening-up policy; but the earth-shaking transformation actually materialized in 1977 when the Gaokao System – the annual college entrance examination – was restored, since it ushered in a new era in which both knowledge and talents would be respected. I was fortunate enough to be among the first batch of college graduates after the restoration, and thus my life underwent great changes in parallel with the historic 40 years of reform and opening-up.

Jorge Heine: A ‘make or break’ G20 summit in Buenos Aires
Much, if not most, of the media attention at the 13th G20 summit in Buenos Aires this weekend will not be on the meeting itself, but rather on a dinner held on the sidelines of it, that is, the one between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Andy Mok: Black Friday and 11.11: A tale of two (shopping) holidays
Black Friday, the Friday following Thanksgiving, is a well-established tradition in the United States. It marks the start of the Christmas shopping season, which is vitally important for American retailers. The color black is typically associated with calamities, especially financial ones such as stock market crashes. But in this instance, black has a positive meaning. While there are several different origin stories for the name “Black Friday,” since the 1980s it has become commonly accepted that the name marks the time when these retailers move from being in the red (meaning losing money) to be in the black (being profitable).

Wang Huiyao: Fair winds expected from Buenos Aires
A decade after the first G20 leaders meeting in Washington, world leaders will meet this week in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for the 2018 G20 Summit. This time is different due to an expected sidelines bilateral meet-up that the world is keeping a close eye on.
