Forum: Sino-EU cooperation pertinent for AI regulation

December 13 , 2024

AI has huge potential but also risks and challenges, so the regulation is necessary and China and Europe need to cooperate to achieve common development, according to the 9th China Global Think Tank Innovation Forum held recently by the Center for China and Globalization (CCG) in Beijing.

“With the rapid development of the technology and industry revolution, AI has become a core driving force for future industrial development. However, many risks and global challenges, including personal privacy, social equity and military security also occur. Therefore, AI regulation is a global issue that needs to be resolved through consultation and cooperation among countries,” said Yang Xuemei, deputy director of China Science and Technology Exchange Center.

Looking ahead, Yang added that by establishing broadly consensual standards and norms, China and Europe should work together to continuously improve the safety, reliability and fairness of AI.

“Collaboration with China in the field of AI is crucial, which brings many opportunities. There is no doubt that AI is a global problem, which means we need to solve that problem together. We need to conduct joint research, share risks and challenges and achieve sustainable development of AI,” said Marc Horn, president of Merck China.

“First of all, we need to trust each other, so that companies can share the opportunities and research results of this cooperation, which helps to increase competitiveness and is a win-win situation for all. There is also a lot of work to be done by governments and non-governmental organizations,” said Andreas Hubem, vice-president of China-Brücke e.V., a Sino-German NGO.
