“Whole-process people’s democracy” is China’s tried-and-tested means to engage its citizens on issues and solicit solutions to their present-day challenges. This was the message from Chinese scholars who are taking part in the Athens Democracy Forum now underway in the Greek capital. CGTN’s Wu Bin reports.

The Athens Democracy Forum opened on October 1, featuring a dialogue between Wang Huiyao, the Founder and President of the Center for China and Globalization, and Jeffrey D. Sachs, the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University. Their discussion, titled the Aristotle-Confucius Dialogue, explored the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western philosophies.

Wang highlighted the unprecedented challenges posed by the rise of populism and nationalism to globalization, yet maintained that globalization remains a vital and resilient trend. He also advocated for drawing lessons from ancient civilizations to address modern issues.

WANG HUIYAO, Founder and President, Center for China and Globalization “I think the meaning of this dialogue is very important. We have this ancient philosophy, we seek their wisdom, we seek their ideas on how we can make peace, make the world functional and make democracy work.”

Wang also shared insights on China’s development and its role in global governance, discussing the principles of whole-process people’s democracy and consultative democracy within the Chinese political framework.

WANG HUIYAO, Founder and President, Center for China and Globalization “A high moral standard alongside greater responsibilities are mandated for officials at all levels to perform well. This is why China was able to lift 800 million people out of poverty and become the world’s second largest economy in record time.”

Mo Jihong, the Director of the Institute of Law at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, elaborated on the concept of whole-process people’s democracy, and on its reflection of socialist democratic principles tailored to Chinese characteristics. The Athens Democracy Forum, convened since 2013, aims to serve as a guiding beacon for democracy and societal reorientation. Wu Bin, CGTN.
