Digital Trade Think Tank announced at 2nd Global Digital Trade Expo
November 25 , 2023Deals on 32 projects with a total value of over 155.8 billion yuan (about USD 21.89 billion) were reached by leading enterprises at the recently concluded second Global Digital Trade Expo held in Hangzhou, capital city of east China’s Zhejiang Province, according to the provincial department of commerce.
Themed “Digital Trade, Global Access,” the expo was held from November 23th to 27th and attracted 68 international organizations and business associations, as well as over 800 enterprises.
Booming global digital trade has become a new bright spot in international trade, Chinese President Xi Jinping said in a congratulatory letter to the Expo. In recent years, China has actively worked to align with high-standard international economic and trade rules, established and improved its digital trade governance systems, and promoted the reform and innovation of digital trade. By doing that, China is providing new opportunities for the world with its renewed development, Xi said.
The five-day expo, the first national digital trade fair backed by the central government, serves as a forum for presenting new digital technologies and products as well as a platform to discuss new industry standards, trends, markets and cooperation.
During the Expo, the founding of the GDTE Digital Trade Think Tank was officially announced. This institution is expected to provide research support in the promotion of academic and theoretical work, policy and institutional research, and international cooperation and innovation in global digital trade.
On November 23rd, the GDTE Digital Trade Think Tank was officially announced at the Second Global Digital Trade Expo. Han Jie, Director of the Department of Commerce of Zhejiang Province, and David Blair, Vice President of CCG, unveiled the official plaque of the Digital Trade Think Tank.
The GDTE Digital Trade Think Tank will provide research support and services to the Global Digital Trade Expo focusing in areas such as policy research, institutional innovation, investment promotion, talent recruitment, branding activities, the release of official reports, and international cooperation in the realm of digital trade.
The first team of GDTE Digital Trade Think Tank experts conducted in-depth discussions at the Digital Trade Roundtable on topics such as “New Rules and Standards for Global Digital Trade”, “New Trends in Digital Financial Services”, “Cross border Data Flow and Digital Security Governance”, and “Digital Credit Construction for Products and Services”.
As global consensus forms on trends in digitalization, digital trade has also garnered attention as a new engine for global economic growth. In the congratulatory letter to the second Global Digital Trade Expo, President Xi Jinping called for making full use of the expo to promote cooperation, common development and shared benefits, build digital trade into a new engine for common development, and inject new impetus into world economic growth.
In an opening keynote speech at the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Oct 18, 2023, President Xi noted that China will continue to hold the Global Digital Trade Expo as an annual event.
The global trading system is facing tremendous pressure and must adapt to new developments in the world economy, where digitization has become a powerful engine for trade. During the Expo, Mathias Cormann, Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, emphasized that China plays a crucial role in helping address such pressure.
