The year 2023 marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Europe. On September 20th, during an evening banquet at the 9th China and Globalization Forum, Wu Hongbo, China’s Special Representative for European Affairs, likened labels like “partner”, “competitor”, and “systemic rival” imposed by EU on China to a traffic light showing green, yellow, and red simultaneously, leaving drivers uncertain of which path to take. This has led to confusion and a lack of direction among European politicians, entrepreneurs, and citizens.

So, what has truly influenced the trajectory of Western policies towards China? In September 2023, in an exclusive interview with a correspondent from the Global Times based in the UK, Kerry Brown, Director of the China Institute at King’s College London, stated that the central issue was that Westerners know very little about China. With the aim of exploring the extensive history of exchange between Europe and China, helping both sides better understand the past and future, and gaining a clearer understanding of their current positions to make wiser decisions, in early 2021, Professor Brown began selecting and interpreting significant writings about China by major European thinkers from the time of Marco Polo to the 1970s.

On the afternoon of September 27, 2023 (Wednesday), Professor Brown will host a book launch event for the Simplified Chinese edition of his new work, China Through European Eyes: 800 Years of Cultural and Intellectual Encounter, at the headquarters of the Center for China and Globalization (CCG). He, along with representatives from the Chinese publishing house, as well as our own researchers, will jointly launch and interpret this work.
