The 21st century is experiencing the most rapid development of any century in human history while the world also goes through a re-balancing of power between West and East. What changes will we see in world politics? How will humanity live through the twenty-first century amid escalating geopolitical competition and power shifts? One of the greatest geopolitical changes in the 21st century is the peaceful rise of China and the return of Asia, which has attracted the world’s attention. Will we have an Asian century? How will it be different with the previous British and America centuries? What changes will the Asian century bring to globalization and global governance? These questions raise many thoughts and predictions.

The book The Asian 21st Century, authored by Singapore veteran diplomat Kishore Mahbubani, is part of the “China and Globalization” series that edited by Prof. Wang Huiyao and Prof. Miao Lu and has received broad attention internationally. Offered as an open access book, it tallied over 3 million downloads after its release on January 1, 2022, more than ten times the average number of downloads for academic publications.

Kishore Mahbubani is a veteran diplomat, student of philosophy, and has published many books. Mahbubani is currently a Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore. He has been privileged to enjoy two distinct careers, in diplomacy (1971 to 2004) and in academia (2004 to 2019). In diplomacy, he was with the Singapore Foreign Service for 33 years (1971 to 2004), serving twice as Singapore’s Ambassador to the UN and President of the UN Security Council in January 2001 and May 2002. Mr. Mahbubani entered academia in 2004, when he was appointed the Founding Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, NUS. Mahbubani writes and speaks prolifically on the rise of Asia, geopolitics and global governance. His works include Has China Won? Can Asians Think?, Has the West Lost?, The New Asian Hemisphere, The Great Convergence: Asia, the West, and the Logic of One World, Beyond the Age of Innocence, and The ASEAN Miracle: A Catalyst for Peace (co-authored with Jeffery Sng). His books and articles in the New York Times, Washington Post, Financial Times and Foreign Affairs have earned him global recognition “the muse of the Asian century.” He was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019.

CCG was very honored to take on the task of developing a Chinese-language edition of the book, which has been published by CITIC Press Group. This book consists of essays written by Mahbubani that explore the challenges and dilemmas faced by the West and Asia in an increasingly interdependent world village and intensifying geopolitical environment.

We hope the Chinese-language edition will enable a broader audience to learn from its lessons and gain new perspectives on what are surely some of the most important issues of our age.

On July 19th, the Center for China and Globalization (CCG) will co-host a book launch event with CITIC Press, during which the Prof. Kishore Mahbubani Prof. Wang Huiyao will introduce the book, the publisher, and think tank experts will jointly release and discuss this new publication.
