[CGTN] UN theme: Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow

March 09 , 2022

Since 1996, the United Nations sets out a theme for International Women’s Day. This year, the focus is on gender equality. Zheng Chunying has this report from a symposium on advancing gender equality in the context of the climate crisis.

Advancing gender equality and climate action, these go hand in hand, according to Smriti Aryal, head of UN Women in China.

The United Nations says, across the world, women depend more on, yet have less access to, natural resources.

Analysts say women are not only vulnerable to climate change, but they are also effective change-makers for climate adaptation and mitigation.

A 2019 study found that lawmaking bodies with more women pass more stringent climate policies. For China, a country with a goal of carbon neutrality by 2060, gender equality has been high on government agenda.

In recent years, the country has passed, enacted or amended more than 100 laws and regulations on women’s rights. And such actions have won praise.

Speakers, however, point out that women still face barriers to equal participation in environmental decision-making. And women-led community organizations commonly struggle to access climate finance.

ZHENG CHUNYING CGTN Reporter “The symposium has highlighted the importance of women’s full and equal participation in decisions concerning efforts to combat climate change. Without gender equality, a sustainable future remains beyond our reach. ZHENG CHUNYING, CGTN, BEIJING.”
