2021 Fuchunjiang International Forum Successfully Held in Tonglu

On November 8, 2021, the inaugural Fuchunjiang International Forum, co-sponsored by Center for China and Globalization (CCG), the CPC Hangzhou Committee, and Hangzhou government, was held in Tonglu County of Hangzhou, China. Attendees included representatives from international organizations, international chambers of commerce, multinational companies, and scholars from think tanks as well as governmental officials. The forum focused on prospects for Hangzhou’s green and sustainable development with its own characteristics. The event was co-organized by CCG Yangtze River Delta Research Center, Tonglu CPC organization Department, and the administrative committee of Tonglu’s Fuchunshan Health City.
On the same day, CCG Yangtze River Delta Research Center was unveiled at the opening ceremony of the 10th Hangzhou-Tonglu Week for Tech Talent. This center has been established with the aim of becoming a hub for international exchange, research, gathering cross-field resources and enabling dialogue between academia, industry, and government.
Zhejiang has been set as the Demonstration Zone for Common Prosperity in support of the national goal of common prosperity and reducing inequalities. As an important county of Zhejiang that is enriched with historical, cultural and natural elements, Tonglu has been vigorously promoting green development with the purpose of realizing rural revitalization and the localization of SDGs.
The Fuchunjiang International Forum is a flagship platform to promote the sharing of insights and experiences related to sustainable development between China and the rest of the world. It was held in Tonglu by the side of the picturesque Fuchun River. The renowned ancient Chinese painting “Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains” depicts the kind of beautiful harmony between human and nature that everyone yearns for. Guests from different social disciplines came to Tonglu to discuss technological innovation and Tonglu’s path for urban-rural high-quality development under the framework of China’s 14th Five-Year Plan and the outline of long-term goals for 2035. Opportunities for private-public partnerships and collaboration between different sectors in the process of building a eco-friendly city that embraces its natural assets were also explored.

“The Fuchunjiang International Forum is expected to provide more consultation and cooperation opportunities for rural revitalization, green economy, and international cooperation in Tonglu, through which Tonglu could make better use of its advantages and exhibit the branding value and influence of Chinese cities,” Dr. Wang Huiyao, president of CCG.

“Talent is a the primary resources. The county of Tonglu aims to build a ‘highland of talent in Western suburbs of Hangzhou’ by attracting and nurturing talent. Through Science and technology week, Fuchun Academia Village, and other events, Tonglu endeavors to forge the best environment for talent. This is an important platform for Tonglu to broaden its horizon and attract talent,” said Ding Yifeng, the vice-deputy of CPC Tonglu Committee and Chief Executive of Tonglu County Government.
Attendees including Mr. Leslie Maasdorp, CFO at the New Development Bank, discussed how Tonglu should advance green development and can make full use of its advantageous natural and cultural resources, to enable health industry’s high-quality development with business opportunities. Mr. Carlo D’Andrea, Vice President, European Union Chamber of Commerce in China (EUCCC), noted that mobility is crucial to business and international exchanges, especially for foreign talents. Dr. David Blair, Senior Economist, the Alliance of Global Talent Organizations (AGTO), advised that studies should be undertaken to investigate factors that have been contributing to the success of Yangtze Delta Economic Zone and what lessons can be drawn. Members of GYLD also exchanged ideas on sustainable development, rural revitalization, localization, and the role of global talent.

The first panel of Fuchunjiang International Forum took the theme of “The Yangtze Delta integration program: prospects and challenges” and was moderated by Mabel Miao, CCG secretary-general and founder of GYLD. Discussants explored ways to make pragmatic developments in Tonglu’s industrial transformation featuring shipping services, intelligent manufacturing, health and tourism against the background of the 3rd anniversary of the launch of National Strategy for Integrated Development of the Yangtze Delta. The second panel revolved around “The future of health industries and sustainable economy in the Yangtze Delta” and was moderated by Mike Liu, CCG Vice President and Senior Fellow and former Managing Director of DXC Technology. Topics of discussion included innovation, business environment and technological upgrading .
