The Center for China and Globalization is deeply saddened by the news that one of its esteemed  strategic advisors, former Chinese ambassador to France Wu Jianmin, passed away in a car accident during a business trip in Wuhan on June 18. On behalf of all CCG scholars, council members, and staff, we issue this statement to extend our most sincere condolences to his family.

Ambassador Wu devoted his lifetime’s work  to diplomatic service for China and became an ardent advocate for civil diplomacy and think tank development after his retirement. A refined and intelligent statesman, Wu showed unswerving support for China’s reform and opening-up and its globalization process.  His strategic mindset and forward thinking helped China to better communicate with the world and helped those overseas to deepen their understanding of China’s rise. With a global vision and China in his heart, Ambassador Wu proved himself to be an extraordinary diplomat.

Wu offered generous support to China’s think tank development over many years. Starting in 2011, he joined CCG as a key strategic advisor and continued to provide valuable guidance until his untimely passing. He encouraged CCG to be more open and engage with the international community to expand its global influence.

Although he is no longer with us, we will always remember his tremendous contribution to China’s opening-up and participation in global governance. We will strive to carry on his spirit and continue to push forward China’s globalization process and to make its voice heard in the international arena.
