Experts warn of rising de-globalization momentum after US presidential elections at CCG seminar

The seminar, titled “US President Election and Global Implications: from A Think Tank Perspective”, is co-hosted by CCG and the Political Science School of East China University of Politics and Law and featured Dr. James McGann, director of the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program at the University of Pennsylvania.

In his keynote speech, Mr. McGann introduces to the audience the pivotal role of think tanks played in the US domestic politics for their influence on public policymaking and participation in governance through the “rotating door” system.  With regard to the international impact of the US presidential election, Mr. McGann believes that Mr. Trump has rallied sufficient support with his nationalism and protectionism argument and his presidency may trigger stronger de-globalization momentum that impacts global economy and trade.

Gao Qiqi, dean of the Political Science School at East China University of Political Science and Law, also warns of the uncertainties that lie in the prospect of China-US and Russia-US relations because of the election. He argues that the president-elect is basically a businessman, has no prior political experience and may over-commercialize US policies in the future.

To cope with the uncertainties, CCG President Wang Huiyao suggests that China, as the beneficiary of the globalization, should continue to unswervingly support globalization. Therefore, the Chinese think tanks should broaden their global horizons, absorb the best experience and ideas from international community and thus provide more valuable suggestions to policymakers.
