CCG Seminar Discusses High-Speed Rail Innovation
June 05 , 2019The Center for China and Globalization (CCG) and National Research Center on Strategic Development of High-Speed Railway jointly launches a new book on Chinese high-speed rail innovation on Dec. 13, 2016 at CCG office, exploring the new ideas to enhance the role of high-speed rail in the “One Belt, One Road” initiatives and China’s diplomacy.
CCG President Wang Huiyao notes that the China’s high-speed rail has become a symbol for Chinese companies “Going Out” development, and the development of high-speed rail in China is an outcome of open innovation that integrates Chinese characteristics and international standard.
The new book, titled “High-Speed Rail: An Analysis of the Chinese Innovation System” ,is the first of its kind that provides in-depth analysis of Chinese high-speed rail innovation system from the perspectives of three major players – government, enterprise, and university, and with three major inputs – technology, funding, and human resource. It is also the first research achievement of the National Research Center on Strategic Development of High-Speed Railway headed by Prof. Gao Bai, member of CCG’s Academic Advisory Board and sociology professor at Duke University.
The book reviews the formation and evolution of Chinese high-speed rail innovation system in three phases – accumulation, introduction, and innovation, and the features in each phase.
According to Prof. Gao, the success of Chinese high-speed rail innovation has significant implication to Chinese economic transformation, technology innovation, and industrial upgrading. It is a typical example of the integration of home-grown innovation and imported advanced technology. It is also an outcome of corporate innovation, which lays the foundation, and industrial policies that has accelerated industrial-academic cooperation.
In addition, high-speed rail innovation reflects the role that engineering universities/colleges should play in China’s economic transformation and industrial upgrading, such as the contribution of China Southwest Jiao Tong University and Central South University in the high-speed railway innovation.
