CCG holds reform and opening-up 40th anniversary book series launch

On December 18th, a General Assembly of government officials and prominent figures was gathered at the Great Hall of the People to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the reform and opening-up. Where President Xi Jinping delivered a speech to the General Assembly reviewing the 40 years of reform and underscoring the valuable experience China earned over the past four decades of reform and opening-up.
To celebrate this historic occasion in Chinese history, the Center for China and Globalization (CCG) held its“40 years of reform and opening-up book series launch” at its Beijing headquarters on December 19th. CCG President Dr Wang Huiyao, announced the publishing of CCG’s three latest research works related to China’s reform and opening-up, The Three Years: recalling the classes of 77, 78 and 79; The Rising Tide: Forty Years of Chinese Enterprise Going Overseas and What’s Next for Globalization? Great Changes and China’s Proposed Approaches. In addition to the above three titles, the event also marked the launch of CCG Senior Fellow, former deputy-Director of the Ministry of Commerce and former researcher at the China International Economic Exchange Center, Li Luosa’s book titled China Goes to Globalization: a Study of China’s Opening-up Strategy and Economic Trade Policy.
Representatives of the publishing houses involved in the books launched also attended the event, including Wang Bin, Director of Marketing and Educational Branch of China Social Science Press; Wang Zhao, Editor of People’s Publishing House; Zhang Jing, Vice Director of Book Publishing Center of Xinhua Publishing House; and, Niu Tiehang, former Editor-in-Chief of Globalization Magazine.
These four titles explore China’s 40 years of opening-up and reform from different perspectives, promoting the progress made over the past four decades, whilst looking to set the scene for the next stage in China’s development and providing suggestions for China’s continued globalization. Moreover, these four books tell the story of 40 years of reform and opening-up from a personal perspective, written by individuals who are not only dedicated to researching this period, but who have personal experience either by living through the period as an ordinary citizen or as a person of influence. Each volume seeks to put forward China’s globalization as a central theme over the 40-year course of reform and opening-up. Looking forward, the books point out various risks and challenges China and Chinese organizations may encounter in the continued process of China’s globalization and opening-up, proposing countermeasures.
The Rising Tide: Forty Years of Chinese Enterprises Going Overseas was compiled by CCG President Dr Wang Huiyao and CCG General Secretary Dr Miao Lu, and published by China Social Sciences Press. This book reviews and summarizes the 40-year journey of Chinese enterprises and globalization; it points out ten “casting off” paths for Chinese enterprises going overseas, and puts forward corresponding suggestions according to the challenges commonly faced on the road of enterprise globalization. The publication of this book aims to be a guide for future Chinese companies wishing to “go global”; contributing crucial research and statistics on globalization of Chinese enterprises, this book is of great significance to the future development of the globalization of Chinese enterprises.
The second book launched at the event, What’s Next for Globalization? Great Changes and China’s Proposed Approaches is also authored by CCG President Dr Wang Huiyao and CCG General Secretary Dr Miao Lu, and published by China Social Sciences Press. This book gives a systematic explanation of and reflection on globalization, as the title hints the book contains the authors’ expectations for the future of the process. In addition, included is a detailed analysis of the “China solution”, as seen through the eyes of Chinese scholars in the field of globalization. Through this, the book aims to promote “China wisdom” and the “China solution” to the world in order to further progress globalization.
The third CCG installment released, The Three Years: recalling the classes of 77, 78 and 79 by CCG President Dr Wang Huiyao and CCG General Secretary Dr Miao Lu, was published by People’s Publishing House. This book takes focus on the first three years of undergraduate students to attend university after the resumption of college entrance exams following the end of the Cultural Revolution, their life trajectory intangibly integrated with the reform and opening-up. At the rock face of China’s growing engagement with the world they became witnesses, promoters and defenders of reform and opening-up. Forty years later, many of them have become the backbone of China’s social and economic development, key opinion leaders on China’s path of continuing development. This book is a collection of inspirational stories, thoughts and dreams of over 40 representatives of this generation, such as Chen Ping, Qian Yingyi, Meng Xiaosu, Xu Xiaoping, Tang Min and Zuo Xiaolei. This book highlights the great historical and practical significance in looking back over these personal histories, distilling the spirit of reform for future generations and encouraging the promotion of continued reform and opening up.
The fourth and final book launched at the event was that of CCG Senior Fellow, former deputy-Director of the Ministry of Commerce and former researcher at the China International Economic Exchange Center, Li Luosa, titled China Goes to Globalization: a Study of China’s Opening-up Strategy and Economic Trade Policy, published by Xinhua Publishing House. From 1998 to 2016, Ms. Li Luosa personally participated in research focused on the major strategies and economic and trade policies of China’s opening-up. This book not only covers the major strategic studies of China’s opening up, but also discusses specific policies and measures of China’s economy and trade. This seeks to contribute to the construction of a new pattern of opening up for China and a reformed, open economic system. It also functions as a valuable reference and guidebook for current Sino-US trade frictions, China’s participation in regional economic integration, and China’s participation in global governance.
At the event, speeches were given by CCG President Wang Huiyao, Director of Marketing and Educational Branch of China Social Science Press Wang Bin and CCG Senior Fellow Li Luosa. Dr Wang Huiyao said at the press conference that CCG would publish “Returning to China” in 2019, authored by himslef and Dr. Miao Lu, deputy director and secretary-general of CCG and to be published by People’s Publishing House. Following this the floor was opened for questions from the media.
