Chen Shiyi, President of South University of Science and Technology of China, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, former Vice President and former dean of graduate school at Peking University, and “National Thousand Talents Plan” Recipient.

Mr. Chen studied mechanics at Zhejiang University (B.Sc) from January 1978 to January 1982. He did his postgraduate study (M.Sc, PhD) at Peking University. He was a post-doctoral fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory USA from June 1987 to February 1990. From 1990 till 1997, he was director of the Center for Nonlinear Studies, Los Alamos National Laboratory. Between 1997 to 1999, he was the Deputy Director of the Center for Nonlinear Studies, Los Alamos National Laboratory. He is tenured professor of department of Mechanical Engineering, JHU since Mar. 2001. Between 2002 to 2005. Chen is Director of PKU’s Center for Computational Science and Engineering since 2001. He was dean of College of Engineering at Peking University between June 2005 to July 2013. He acted as the dean of graduate school since January 2011, and vice president of PKU since September 2013. January 2015, Mr. Chen is nominated as the president of South University of Science and Technology of China.

Mr. Chen did some outstanding research in lattice gas methods in which he created important analysis approach and led engineering applications. He also did contributions to the high performance computing. He did fundamental studies in the theory of turbulence. For these reasons, he was elected as a fellow of American Physical Society (1995)and UK Institute of Physics (2004). His research interests include the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), fluid turbulence and multiscale computational fluid dynamics. Chen has published more than 200 journal papers and over 10,000 SCI citations.
