CGTN | Hainan tipped to play key role amid global trade tensions

May 16 , 2025

The Center for China and Globalization(CCG) has held its Luncheon in Beijing focusing on the Hainan Free Trade Port’s progress and China’s efforts to further open up its economy. Officials from Hainan shared insights on the port’s transformative role in an event that brought together diplomats, business leaders and the media to discuss the next phase of economic reform. As China’s largest Special Economic Zone and a key free trade port, they say Hainan’s low tax burden and preferential policies will give a boost to the Chinese economy amid global trade tensions.

WANG HUIYAO, President, Center for China and Globalization “Hainan is poised to take off in the next five to ten years as China’s largest free trade zone. It has the shortest negative list for investment, visa-free access for 78 countries, and hosts major events like the annual Consumer Expo and the Boao Forum for Asia. Most importantly, it serves as a testing ground for new policies that can later be scaled nationwide. Additionally, Hainan’s geographic position makes it the gateway for China to ASEAN and the rest of Asia, further enhancing its strategic importance. In many ways, it could become another economic powerhouse for China, following in the footsteps of Shenzhen and Pudong.”
