In the midst of current geopolitical uncertainties, US-China economic cooperation is facing great challenges. It is in this context that CCG is pleased to partner with the Harvard Kennedy School China Conference to invite Henry Huiyao Wang, Founder and President of the Center for China and Globalization; Jason Furman, Aetna Professor of the Practice of Economic Policy at Harvard University, 28th Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, President Obama’s chief economist and cabinet member; and Zhiwu Chen, Director of the Asia Global Institute at the University of Hong Kong, Chair Professor of Finance at the University of Hong Kong and former Professor of Finance at Yale University, to participate in an in-depth dialogue that focuses on how to maintain a fair and sustainable trade relationship between the US and China, how to ensure stability in financial markets, and how to create more opportunities for cooperation in the future.

About Speakers:

Dr. Henry Huiyao Wang is Founder and President of the Center for China and Globalization (CCG). He is a Vice Chairman of China Association for International Economic Cooperation (CAIEC) under the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), Vice Chairman, China Talent Research Society under the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. He is also Vice Chairman of China Public Relations Association; a Director of Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs and a Director of China National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation, both organizations under the supervision of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is a Professor and Dean of the Institute of Development at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in China. Dr. Wang is a member of Advisory Committee for Global Competence Development of Tsinghua University and serves on the Advising Board of Duke-Kunshan University.

Dr. Wang is a Steering Committee Member of Paris Peace Forum and was an Advising Board Member for International Organization of Migration (IOM) of the UN. He pursued his doctoral studies at University of Western Ontario and University of Manchester, and obtained PhD degree in international management. He was a Visiting Fellow at The Brookings Institution, a Senior Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School and a Senior Fellow at Asia-Pacific Foundation of Canada. He has published over 100 books in English and Chinese along with hundreds of journal articles and opinion pieces on global relations, global governance, global migration, China outbound and inbound investment and trade, Chinese Diasporas and Chinese think tanks.

Jason Furman is an American economist and professor at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and a Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. On June 10, 2013, Furman was named by President Barack Obama as chair of the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA). Furman has also served as the Deputy Director of the National Economic Council, which followed his role as an advisor to candidate Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign. Since 2019, he has taught Economics 10, the year-long introductory economics course at Harvard, together with David Laibson. Furman graduated from the Dalton School in 1988. In 1992, he graduated with an AB in social studies from Harvard University, where his freshman year roommate was Matt Damon. He then received an MSc from the London School of Economics. Furman later returned to Harvard, where he received an AM in government in 1995 and a PhD in economics in 2004.

Professor Zhiwu Chen is Director of the Asia Global Institute (AGI), Chair Professor of Finance and Victor and William Fung Professor in Economics at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Professor Chen is also a former Professor of Finance at Yale University (1999-2017). His research covers finance theory, the sociology of finance, economic history, quantitative history, emerging markets, as well as China’s economy and capital markets. He was also a Special-Term Visiting Professor at Peking University and Tsinghua University. Professor Chen received his PhD in financial economics from Yale University in 1990; MS in systems engineering from Changsha Institute of Technology in 1986; and BS in computer science from Central-South University in 1983. He has also served as Assistant Professor of Finance at University of Wisconsin – Madison (1990-95); Associate Professor of Finance at Ohio State University (1995-99); and Professor of Finance at Yale University. He has been AGI Director and the Victor and William Fung Professor in Economics at HKU since July 2016. In July 2019, Professor Chen was conferred the title of Chair Professor of Finance in recognition of his contribution to the study of finance.
