Panel Discussion: China’s Vision of International Order

On July 29, 2020 the Institute for Peace & Diplomacy hosted a panel discussion about China’s vision of international order.

Background:

U.S. officials including Secretary of State Pompeo often refer to China as a “revisionist” power that aims to undermine the rules-based international order. However, some experts believe that China’s actions must be considered a counterbalancing reaction to the United States as the world is in transition from unipolarity to a more multipolar order.

Considering the recent escalation in US-China competition and China’s increasingly assertive foreign policy, this panel aims to examine China’s thinking and vision of world order.

Here are some of the questions that will be discussed as part of this panel:

How China’s rise will impact the current international order?

What is China’s vision for the international system?

How the international community can deescalate rising tensions and prevent conflicts during this period of adjustments and changes?

Victor Gao: Vice President of the Center for China and Globalization(CCG).

Robert S. Ross: Professor of Political Science at Boston College and Associate at the Fairbank Centre for Chinese Studies, Harvard University.

Jeffrey Reeves: Vice-President of Research at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada.
