CCG New Year Reception draws 200 guests from home and abroad

The Center for China and Globalization (CCG) held its 2019 New Year Appreciation Dinner at the Hilton, Beijing on Saturday January 19th, 2019. The event saw national leaders, ambassadors and embassy representatives, CCG chairman, vice chairmen and directors, CCG experts, renowned entrepreneurs, multinational executives, international organization representatives and well-known media figures come together to celebrate CCG’s work over the past year and share in what the coming year has in store for China’s leading non-governmental think tank.
In his opening speech, CCG President, Wang Huiyao spoke of the twists and turns seen throughout the past year, stating that for China, 2018 had been a year of facing challenges and determined reform. Whereas for Chinese think tanks, 2018 was a year for testing their strength and reaching out to the world. Mr Wang also noted that last year marked CCG’s ten year anniversary, reminding the audience of some of the think tank’s incredible policy and research achievements as well as some of the awards it has received over the past decade. Expressing his gratitude to CCG supporters, Mr Wang finished by saying that these successes would not have been possible without those who have supported CCG throughout this time, once again thanking guests for attending this year’s New Year Appreciation Dinner, he wished the audience a happy New Year.
Long Yongtu, CCG Chairman, former Vice Minister of Ministry of Foreign Economic Cooperation and Trade and former Secretary-General of the Boao Forum for Asia, took to the podium. Chairman Long Yongtu, reflected on the past year’s international uncertainities, noting the rising trend in anti-globalization and difficulties encountered in Sino-US relations. Mr Long concluded his speech by stating that it is for this reason that Chinese think tanks should strive to make their voices heard and continue to make contributions to promote globalization and progress Sino-US relations.
H.E. Nicholas Rosellini, UN Resident Coordinator in China, began by pointing out that it was not only CCG who were celebrating an anniversary in the year of 2018, China’s reform and opening-up celebrated its 40th anniversary also, with the UN Development Program soon to celebrate its 40th anniversary too. He continued, commenting that China has made great achievements in opening up and international affairs during this period, among which think tanks and research organizations like CCG have been significant contributors. Finally, Mr Rosellini, highlighted the close cooperation CCG and UN agencies have engaged in over the years, and that he looks forward to furthering their work together and exchanges in the future.
After the speeches, CCG Secretary General Dr Miao Lu took to the stage to review CCG’s achievements over the last year, showcasing awards and outstanding position rankings the think tank received both domestically and internationally, as well as presenting a selection of the many research reports and books released by CCG in the past year. CCG has closely followed international trends, held dozens of seminars in China and overseas and conducted formal and informal surveys across its networks over the last 12 months. Through this work CCG has produced specific policy suggestions and made regular proposals to central government and ministires on both international and domestic issues. Dr Miao Lu said that in the coming year CCG will continue in the same vein, working to advance the opening-up of China and Chinese global engagement.
CCG Vice Chairman Wang Junfeng and Vice Chairman He Mei, also addressed the reception, providing comments on CCG’s efforts throughout 2018 and its prospects for the new year. Following the speeches, two musical performances took place, inbetween which guests were invited to take part in a lucky draw as well as sign and leave comments on our CCG wall. The first performance of the evening was internationally renowned violinst Lü Siqing, who gave a remarkable performance of two classical pieces. He was followed by Lei Yang, a soprano singer with the Chinese National Opera and Dance Drama Theater, who performed a number of songs to close off the evening. This event was hosted by Tian Wei, CCG senior non-resident fellow and CGTN host, and Zheng Junfeng, also a host on CGTN.
