A team from Taiwan visited CCG and exchanged opinions on the ‘Belt and Road’ Initiative and globalization

On Aug 31, 2017, together with the officials of Taiwan Affairs Office, a team from Taiwan, who focuses on the ‘Belt and Road’ Initiative and globalization, visited Center for China and Globalization (CCG). Nearly 20 professors from Taiwan University, National Chengchi University and other universities in Taiwan shared their opinions on the ’Belt and Road’ Initiative and globalization with the academicians and researchers of Academia Sinica, the officials of Taiwan Affairs Office and the experts of CCG.

During the discussion, the guests had an in-depth conversation on issues such as the concept of the ‘Belt and Road’, the geographical influence of the Initiative and its impact on relevant countries, the risks of globalization, China’s participation in global governance, the enhancement of soft power and etc.

Dr. Wang Huiyao, the President of CCG, mentioned in his speech that globalization is a double-edged sword. In his opinion, it is important for a think tank to invite experts to discuss how to avoid the risks of globalization and to take advantage of good opportunities. In studying globalization, CCG’s research incorporates plural analysis, theoretical research, the response to the outburst of public eventuality and the building of social consensus. Furthermore, Dr. Wang pointed out that the development of the ‘Belt and Road’ Initiative required the joint efforts of the whole of society and Taiwan has a critical role in its development.

Professor of Department of Politics of Taiwan University Zhu Hanyun highly admired their conversation with CCG. To his mind, regardless of the areas, ecology, trade, finance or global governance, BRICS and other developing countries have become main characters of international society. The transition has a far-reaching influence. First, their development further motivates globalization. Second, the current multilateral system and rules of game of the international system may be changed by their growth. Additionally, he also appreciated the contribution CCG has made to provide a platform for such communication.

Additionally, during the discussion, Dr. Wang Huiyao introduced the operation, the values and missions of independent think tanks to the experts from Taiwan. In response, the experts expressed their expectation for more research results from CCG. Although it was the first time that CCG had a discussion with a team from Taiwan, both sides believed it was the starting point of the two sides’ communication and they would have more cooperation in many areas in the future.
